Mystery Beyond Our Naming

“A comprehended god is no god.” St. John Chrysostom

I can accept huge generalities about the divine, such as “God is love” or “God is life” or “God is substance” or “God is spirit.” Such statements still leave room for a variety of experiences and growth. But when people insist that God is male, or only interested in people of one religion or another, or is partial to one nation or another, or shares their prejudices against LBGT people (or anyone else), then I tend to check out. A god that can be limited to any sacrament, text, creed, religion, nation, gender, sexual orientation, or understanding is simply not “god enough” for me.

Prayer Treatment
Spirit of life – though I trust that I am part of a Great Whole, and the Whole must be greater than the sum of Its parts, I admit that all I really know about you is my experience of you. Thankfully, that experience is good, gracious, and empowering. I continue gladly on life’s journey. Amen.
